Tips on Working Remotely from Home | Coronavirus in Dubai

/ Lifestyle

The teeny tiny microorganisms which cannot be seen with the naked eye are so powerful that they’ve made companies across the globe temporarily shut down in fear of it. Yes, we’re talking about Covid-19, the respiratory tract infection which is financially and mentally draining the world. As of today, there are 570 cases in UAE, 58 of which have recovered. The number is predicted to multiply in the next four weeks. With the majority of UAE in lock down, individuals have been encouraged to practice social distancing and self-quarantine. Even amid this chaos, work has to be done. With restrictions to abide by, companies have instructed employees to work from home. Meetings are being conducted through video calling services, tasks are being reported online, business transactions are being made on text, and the list goes on. If you’re new to working remotely, do not fret. People all over the world have been doing that before the corona outbreak. Here’s a complete guide on how to make the most of working remotely from home:

1.      Choose the fastest and most effective way to communicate

Tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Slack are available for the employees to communicate through. Depending on the line of work, choose the best tool. For example, if you’re managing a team and need to explain everything in detail, jump on to video calls. If you’re working in a team and issues need to be addressed, video or audio group calls are an effective way of communication easily. Some companies already have in-house tools for security and safety purposes. According to Harvard Business, there should also be ‘groups’ for random, off-topic talking so that the employees can stay fresh, and interact like they did at the office. Did you know that the authorities have lifted the ban on VoIP applications to help educational institutions and offices work with ease? A silver-lining amidst the chaos!

2.      Set a remote working schedule to follow

Of course, working at an office with a set schedule is more likable for individuals who get distracted easily or do not find comfort in working from their homes. However, working from home can be just as productive, if not more. The key is to stay organized. Create a task-list and arrange the tasks priority-wise. Set up alarms, meetings and minimize the usage of your phone during this period. According to the BBC, you can work in your pajamas only if you work with full dedication. Otherwise, you ought to shower, dress up, and be in the entire work feel.

3.      Set a distraction-free zone

Being in quarantine with a house full of people can be a big distraction. With children not going to school and your partner staying at home as well, things can get a little out of hand. To not let the distractions decrease your productivity, make a ‘home-office’ similar to your actual office. Set up a desk, monitor, and notepad, etc. – all that you need in one place. This also means choosing a place where no external sound and activity is going on. If you’re still unable to manage, choose odd timings to work. This will help you accomplish more.

4.      Being at home doesn’t mean there’s no break

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Some people feel that being at home means sitting in front of the screen the entire day. To work effectively and efficiently, you need to embed breaks in your schedule. It can be one break or multiple little breaks throughout the day. Make sure that you are consistent with your breaks and you don’t procrastinate on your work! As a team, you can decide one time that suits all.

5.      Include some physical activity in your schedule

Don’t sit in one place, all day! Physical activity is not only vital to stay fit, but it also enables your thought process to be more creative. So for fast and good decision making, run for 30 minutes. If you’re not a fan of running or sports, brisk walking can go a long way too. There are various social media influencers uploading workout videos to help individuals stay healthy and motivated during this time.

6.      Wake up on time

This is probably the most important tip. You might have no one to report to and the want of catching up on years of sleep, but don’t fall in the devil’s trap. Wake up early and achieve more. Research suggests that waking up 15 minutes early can help you stay ahead of your chores, and make you accomplish more till night. But this certainly does not mean that you miss out on sleep. Get around 7 hours of good sleep. If you feel anxious and cannot sleep, consult a specialist. Lack of sleep will cause health problems and ruin your work routine in the long run.

With all these tips in mind, you’ll surely be a great remote worker. However, it can take some time in getting used to so don’t be so hard on yourself. Lift up your spirit and avoid complete isolation by voicing your concern to your colleagues.
